Lesson 9 Part 2- Zinio

While using Zinio, I looked at three magazines.

1.  Cloth Paper Scissors
2.  Games World of Puzzles
3.  MacWorld

The Zinio App is available for the following seven devices/platforms:

1.  iPhone
2.  iPad
3.  Android
4.  Windows 8
5.  Mac
6.  PC
7.  Kindle Fire/HD/HDX

Lesson 9 Part 1 Hoopla

Three of the titles in the Audiobooks Top Titles section were:

The Husband's Secret by Liane Moriarty
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Don't Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late! by Mo Willems

I think that services like Hoopla are changing libraries in the sense that more patrons are taking advantage of digital resources.  In my day to day time on the Reference desk, I mostly assist patrons with OverDrive.  I am sure that as awareness of Hoopla grows, I will see more people asking about it.

Lesson 8 Part 2 Challenge - eAudiobooks

All three search platforms were fairly easy to use.  I think that as a patron though, it would be easiest to search for a specific title in the OPAC, which would then point you to the right service.  For example I searched all three services for any of the Sammy Keyes audiobooks; I was unable to locate them on any of the services.  A catalog search would have shown me that they are only available as physical audio books, there are no electronic copies.  I was eventually able to locate a Rick Riordan book on each of the services.  OverDrive had The Blood of Olympus, OneClick carries all of his adult titles and Hoopla had some of the 39 Clues series.

Lesson 8 Part 1 Challenge

Overdrive

I chose to check on the availability of Divergent by Veronica Roth.  SAPL owns both the eBook and audiobook versions of this title.  SAPL owns 97 copies of the eBook and there are currently 38 copies available for checkout.  The audio book has 15 copies in Overdrive, with no available copies for checkout.  There is currently a waiting list of 28 people.

Next I checked on Revenge of the Witch by Joseph Delaney.  SAPL owns both the eBook and audiobook versions of this book.  SAPL owns 2 copies of the eBook and 1 copy is available for checkout.  SAPL owns 1 copy of the audiobook, it is currently checked out and there are no holds at this time.

Lesson 6 Part 2 Challenge

Negative Effects of Social Media

I often see people airing their dirty laundry on sites such as Facebook.  Some things probably do not need to be shared with the whole wide world.  I think that some people let it all hang out on social media and they say and do things they would not do in a face to face interaction.

Lesson 6 Part 1 Challenge

Social Networking

I am a passive social network user.  I have a Facebook account, but I am not an active poster.  I occasionally change my status and update my cover photo, but it doesn't happen very often.  I enjoy browsing my Facebook feed and seeing pictures of my friends and their families.  When I initially joined Facebook it was fun reconnecting with old friends from high school and college, but it did not cause me to actually reconnect with any of these people in person.  I also have a Twitter account, but I don't think I have ever sent a tweet.  I enjoy using Goodreads, but again, I am not a very active user. The same goes for Pinterest, Instagram, Google+, Snapchat, I have accounts but I really don't use them very much.  I am more of a lurker.

Lesson 5 Challenge

I tried three challenges.  First was the Movie Challenge.  I could not get 100%, the best I could do in three tries was 95%.  I did better on the Broadway Challenge, I was able to get 100% on my second try.  The last challenge I tried was the Piranha Challenge, this time it took three tries to get to 100%. I enjoyed these challenges, they made me realize that what I think are the best keywords may not necessarily be the best keywords.

Lesson 3 Part 2 Challenge

While I use the Staff LibGuides fairly often, I don't find myself using the public guides as much. While exploring the Public LibGuides, I found several guides that would have been useful in some recent patron interactions.  We have a regular patron who appears to be homeless, he might benefit from the guide on Community Assistance.  Another patron was an avid Stephen King reader and was looking for a new author with a similar style.  The Author Readalikes guide has a section for Stephen King.  Yesterday, I assisted a patron in locating books on Texas History.  He might have enjoyed going through the Texas History LibGuide, as well.

I do use the staff LibGuides quite a big.  I find myself using the Circulation LibGuide when I can't remember how to do something Circulation related or want clarification on a certain procedure.  I also use the Marketing LibGuide when I am creating flyers for the branch.

Lesson 3 Part 1 Challenge

Don and Marcy decided that they wanted to take a trip to the Florida Keys.  As they were especially interested in the history of the Keys, Don used his SAPL card to access the library's online databases. Using the Images of America database, Don was able to find a great deal of information about the history of the Florida Keys.  He learned about everything from Key Largo to Key West.  Since Marcy knew they were driving their 1964 Ford Mustang all the way to the Keys from Texas, she made sure to bookmark the library's Chilton Auto Repair Database, since the car was always needing minor repairs.  Every good road trip needs a good musical soundtrack, so Don and Marcy utilized the Freegal Music service to compile a terrific playlist for the trip.

Lesson 2 Part 3 Challenge Outlook

I had previously created a signature for my Outlook email, so all I had to do was use the Snipping Tool.  I did pin the Snipping Tool to the Start Menu, so that I wouldn't have to go searching for it deep in the Start Menu every time I wanted to use it.  :)

Lesson 2 Part 3 Challenge Word

I can see using Word to create very simple flyers, but I prefer using Publisher.  Publisher is my go to program for creating flyers and signs.

Lesson 2 Part 2 Challenge 2

Pinning to the task bar was nice and easy.

Lesson 2 Part 2 Challenge 1

I found that using the snipping tool was pretty easy.  I can see that it would be really useful when you are putting together training materials and need to capture screen shots. I always have a lot of trouble trying to get my Mac keyboard to do a screen shot on my Windows running computer, the snipping tool makes that job a cinch.

Lesson 1, Part 3 Challenge

Setting up a blog this time was easy, since I am just reusing my 23 things blog.  :)  It was not at all difficult to follow the blogs of others.
